DOUBLE BILL The Secret Country: The First Australians Fight Back (1985) & Utopia (2013) by John Pilger
The secret history of Australia is a historical conspiracy of silence. Written history has long applied selectivity to what it records, largely ignoring the shameful way that the First Nations (aka Aborigines), were and continue to be, treated.
The Secret Country: The First Australians Fight Back (1985, 55mins)
John Pilger returns home to Australia to explore the rich diversity and ingenuity of the Australian culture. However he discovers the shameful history of persecution of the first Australians (aka Aborigines). The Secret Country tells of their struggles as they were driven from their lands, following events throughout the 20th century as they relate to Indigenous rights.
Utopia (2013, 110mins)John Pilger
John Pilger returns to the communities he visited 28 years ago. The documentary takes its title from Utopia, an Aboriginal homeland in the Northern Territory of Australia and explores the experiences of indigenous Australians and what he terms “the denigrating of their humanity”. Utopia is both an epic portrayal of the oldest continuous human culture, and an investigation into a suppressed colonial past and rapacious present.
